Nike EYBL Virginia: Game-Highs
This also appears on the new Hoopmasters.com re-design, now Hot100Hoops.com. The prep school players recap can be read at Big East Basketball Report.HAMPTON, Va. – The NIKE Elite Youth Basketball League tipped off its 2011 travel season this past weekend.
Forty teams will be fortunate to travel to Dallas and Los Angeles for the next sessions of league play with hopes to advance to July's Peach Jam in North Augusta, S.C., where they'll play for the league championship and have the opportunity to be evaluated by hundreds of college coaches watching them.
Taking a look through the box scores on the league’s official site, here’s who stood out at one of the most competitive events in the country every year…
For the scorers, Omar Calhoun (Gauchos/Christ the King, NY) had four games over 25 while Rodney Purvis (CP3 All-Stars/Upper Room Christian, NC) and Ricardo Ledo (Albany City Rocks/Notre Dame Prep, MA) had three each.
Rebounding-wise, Jermaine Morgan (Mac Irvin Fire/Whitney Young, IL) edged out Ricardo Gathers (Louisiana Select/Riverside Academy, LA) by one board with an event-high of 18. However, Gathers had the most total 10-plus games of anyone.
Among the most active defensive players were Mike Tobey (Gauchos/Hotchkiss, CT) and Aaron Gordon (Oakland Soldiers/Archbishop Mitty, CA), who also had multiple big games on the glass combined with having the top two shot block outings as well. Tobey had the high of 10 in one game while Nerlens Noel (BABC/Tilton, NH) matched him in total number over the three days (14).
Kyle Anderson (Playaz/St. Anthony, NJ) had an event high 28 assists throughout the weekend and also was tied with three other players for most steals in a game (five). Backcourt players Derrick Randolph (Mac Irvin Fire/Whitney Young, IL), J-Mychal Reese (Houston Hoops/Bryan, TX), Dominic Artis (Oakland Soldiers/Salesian, CA) and Joel Berry (Each One Teach One/Lake Highland Prep, FL) popped up in both categories as well.
Point guards Tony Bagtas (Georgia Stars/Westlake, GA) and Dashawn Suber (Gauchos/St. Patrick’s) tied for the assist game-high with 13 each.
Also worth mention was swingman Negus Webster-Chan (CIA Bounce/Huntington Prep, WV) having a pair of four-steal games.
Work in multiple categories was most often seen by D’Vaunte Smith-Rivera (Spiece Indy Heat/North Central, IN) and Willie Cauley (MoKan Elite/NW Olathe, KS).
Below are the event leaders…
